Pool Safety Violations at Florida Schools and Colleges 2017

We ranked the violations in a year’s worth of swimming pool inspection reports at Florida colleges, universities, and high schools. See how each school stacked up!

By the time your child is ready to dive back into school in the Fall, you’ve probably considered every aspect of their education. It’s no secret that some schools fare better than others. From the depth and quality of the school’s instructors and extracurricular programs, to the campus, other students, and the facilities, there’s a lot to consider when giving students their best chance to sink or swim.

But one area that we think lots of people aren’t aware of is the quality of the school’s swimming pool. Not every swimming pool is in good shape, whether it’s missing vital safety equipment, or is in need of physical repair. That’s why we analyzed a year’s worth of swimming pool inspection records from the Florida Department of Health.  We looked at every available inspection report from June 2016 to June 2017 to see which Florida schools had the best pools in the past year.

Colleges and Universities

For parents who are sending their son or daughter off to college in Florida this year, it’s important to know if the pool on campus needs some serious attention when it comes to health and safety violations. After all, mom or dad won’t be around to play lifeguard and keep an eye on things. Luckily, most pools at colleges and universities in Florida are in great shape, but there are a few that have a little way to go in that department.

High Schools, Schools, Academies, and Montessories

For high school and elementary students who have yet to float off to college, the chances are higher that mom and dad can be around the see the facilities for themselves. Still, if you have a sinking feeling about the quality of the swimming facilities that your child is using, you might be justified. Most are fine, but some of the schools, academies, and montessories we analyzed are “in the deep end” when it comes to violations.

Kiddie Pools

We thought our study would be a little shallow if we omitted kiddie and wading pools. While they might not hold as much water as their larger cousins, it’s still important to keep them clean and safe. Like most pools, the majority had zero, or very few health and safety violations in the past year. But some might need a little more attention than others.

How We Made This Study

We manually compiled over 99,000 publicly available swimming pool inspection records from the Florida Department of Health. We used data analysis software to specifically analyze records that pertained to schools, colleges, universities, academies, and any school-related name we could identify. Finally we added up every health and safety violation for each property and reported the results in the tables above.
